Case Study: Mount Alvernia College

  • Mount Alvernia College with Haiku
Haiku fans provided the right match of design, finish and scale to complement the new classrooms, laboratories and offices for the college. Their presence is subtle and delightful, and not visually bulky or imposing. Haiku feels at home within all of the rooms. Jeffrey Briant, m3architecture

Problem

An independent Catholic girls’ school, Mount Alvernia College is situated on a modern and innovative campus in Kedron, Brisbane. School leaders sought a way to improve cooling and circulation in classroom spaces, so they partnered with m3architecture to review their options. Air con wasn’t a viable choice, as it did not suit open doors and natural ventilation, and domestic fans were too small to make a significant impact. The college needed a solution that not only embodied the characteristics of this state-of-the-art campus, but also performed cost effectively all year round.

Solution

m3architecture suggested Haiku® by Big Ass Fans® to efficiently and intelligently improve classroom comfort. Now, 183 Haiku fans have been integrated throughout the space. With 10 settings, including Whoosh® Mode, which mimics the flow natural breezes, each class has the ability to adjust the fans according to its individual comfort preferences. “We expect the Haiku fans to provide us considerable energy savings, compared to past years when air con was used,” Mount Alvernia Business Manager Paulette Corkery said. “We also enjoy the look of the fans — they blend in well so the college comes across as a well-designed facility.”
