The owners of Pa Ka Makani farm wanted a fully-functioning facility with all the comforts of the modern world—completely off the grid. For Architect Matt Goyke, that was a tall order, but not an impossible one. He designed the farm’s residence to take advantage of the area’s abundant breezes, creating a home that used air conditioning in only two rooms. The rest of the residence features natural ventilation, but breezes through the windows weren’t enough to keep the home comfortable. Goyke needed a way to create air movement inside the house, regardless of the weather outside.
Goyke designed the residence with a 10-ft (3.1-m) Isis® fan in the central great room and two Haiku® fans along the indoor/outdoor lanai. The large Isis suits the scale of the great room better than a group of small fans that would “junk up the ceiling,” as Goyke put it. The fans provide air circulation throughout the home, keeping it comfortable without air conditioning, even when outdoor temperatures approach 90°F (32.2°C). In addition, the energy-efficient fans use very little of the power generated by the home’s solar panels, contributing to the project’s prestigious LEED® Platinum certification.
