Case Study: Fifth Third Pavilion

People love the fans. I mean love them. They walk in and go 'wow!' Plus, having the fans going is a way to keep pigeons and other pests out of the pavilion - we hadn't even thought about that. They're really a huge hit. Harold Tate, President, Lexington Downtown Development Authority

Problem

When city officials in Lexington, Kentucky decided to build an open-air pavilion in the middle of downtown, the project brought an underutilized plot of land to life. The Fifth Third Pavilion is the location of dozens of concerts, weddings and festivals every year—not to mention the weekly farmers’ market, which packs the pavilion to the gills during spring, summer and fall. With so many visitors coming through the space, a cooling solution was required to keep everyone comfortable, no matter what the weather.

Solution

Lead architect Clete Benken from Kinzelman Kline Gossman Architects designed the pavilion to enhance natural ventilation with airflow from Big Ass Fans®. Clerestory openings at the top of the structure allow hot air to escape, while four 10-ft (3m) diameter Isis® fans and one 16-ft (4.9m) diameter Element fan work silently to keep air moving throughout the pavilion. The airflow is a welcome addition to the space, whether visitors are enjoying live music, shopping for produce, finishing up a race through downtown or just stopping by to admire the architecture.
