Problem

Signature Flight Support in Minneapolis, Minnesota, needed to keep its hangars and lobby warm in the winter and cool in the summer—not an easy task with 16- to 30-ft (4.9- to 9.1-m) ceilings. Radiant tube heaters suspended from the hangar ceilings heated the roof deck to 95°F (35°C), but struggled to push heat down to keep things warm at occupant level. In addition, giant overhead doors made keeping the space comfortable even more difficult. In the lobby, high ceilings and walls of glass windows presented an additional heating and cooling challenge.

Solution

Each 28,900-sq-ft (2,685-sq-m) hangar now sports a 24-ft (7.3-m) diameter Powerfoil® fan. These Big Ass Fans® gently push the warm air from the heaters down to occupant level, where it really counts. Recirculation of air from the fans has cut the hangars’ reheat time in half, saving energy and keeping everyone much more comfortable. Signature Flight also installed an 8-ft (2.4-m) Isis® fan in the lobby. The fan helps maintain a comfortable 70°F (21°C), even with 16-ft (4.9-m) ceilings and Minnesota’s bitterly cold winters.
