The fans are sleek, modern and a little bit industrial. They fit the space very well, complementing our open, clean look. Whitney Dorn, LEED AP

Problem

Designed to be net-zero, the DPR Construction San Diego office relies heavily on Mother Nature to operate efficiently. Solar panels generate enough power to balance the building’s annual energy consumption (and then some), and the structure’s framework consists primarily of recycled materials. While the climate of San Diego is famously temperate, designers of the modern workspace needed a way to address ventilation concerns while providing comfort on unusually hot or cold days. With the firm’s candidacy for LEED Platinum® status in the balance, efficiency was the top priority.

Solution

Ten 8-ft (2.4-m) Isis® fans, paired with large operable windows, provide mixed-mode ventilation. Powered by a patented gearless motor, Isis silently generates cooling breezes gentle enough to not ruffle papers. Not only is the office comfortable for employees, but the Big Ass Fans® contributed points to the Energy Optimization and Thermal Comfort Controllability categories in DPR’s pursuit of LEED Platinum level certification. Ultimately, the project became the first commercial office in San Diego to achieve both net-zero status and LEED Platinum for New Construction.
