Problem

Kampung Kampus is a low-carbon-footprint experiential learning center that offers nature-oriented workshops, camps and retreats for schools and corporations. Home of the non-profit Ground-Up Initiative (GUI), this 2.6 hectare campus is the first of its kind in Singapore and was envisioned by community volunteers as a way to help locals reconnect with their roots. Because of its strong commitment to sustainability, the organisation was determined to keep energy use as low as possible in its offices, while still ensuring occupants’ comfort. Architect Cai Bingyu used a combination of passive architecture and mechanical assistance to achieve the goals of Kampung Kampus, one of which was to inspire the many people who visit.

Solution

Knowing that fans use a fraction of the energy compared to air conditioning while creating an environment that is equally comfortable, the team installed Haiku fans to provide optimal air circulation. Bingyu said the Haiku fans are installed in the main office area, the meeting room and the training room. The black fans’ silence and remote control are much appreciated, as are their sleek modern looks, which complement the brick and other design features. Because of Singapore’s tropical climate, the fans often work with air conditioning to keep things comfortable. But on days that aren’t “crazy hot,” said Bingyu, the fans keep everyone cool without the help of A/C. He said guests are always impressed by how unobtrusive but effective the fans are.

Because Haiku fans are certified under the Singapore Green Building Product Scheme, integrating them into the project helped the architecture team achieve the highest level of Green Mark Platinum Award.
